The game of basketball has changed quite a bit from the time James Naismith created it. Even in the past few years, we've seen teams focus their offense around the 3 point line in a way that may be hurting the game. What, if anything, should be done do to protect the game?
The chart below was posted on twitter yesterday by the NBA on ESPN account and shows that shot selection has changed in the NBA in the past 20 years.
There have been numerous changes suggested, such as widening the floor, extending the 3 point line further, but I'd propose a different option. What if the rules were changed so field goals scored in the paint were just one point? Let's bring back the mid-range game. All of a sudden the block/charge call around the rim isn't nearly as important. Why foul someone when they are scoring in the paint now? It speeds up the game and reduces fouls.
