In a move that comes as a shock to few, sophomore guard Kaleb Joseph will be taking his talents elsewhere.
Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports was first to report that Kaleb Joseph has decided to transfer elsewhere after two less than stellar seasons suiting up for the Syracuse Orange. It cannot be said that this move was unexpected.
Joseph was expected to be Syracuse's point guard of the future. After a year of apprenticeship under Tyler Ennis, he would be ready to take the reigns. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. With Ennis declaring for the draft following his freshman season, Boeheim was left no choice but to throw the freshman Joseph into the ring. It was certainly a trial by fire, as he only averaged 5.0 points and 3.8 assists per game in 30 starts for the Orange last season.
While Boeheim said before the season that Joseph had made tremendous strides in improving his game, it never got to show on the court. Joseph only appeared in 19 games for Syracuse this season, averaging only 6.0 minutes per. Meanwhile, freshman Frank Howard became a mainstay in the rotation as a backup point guard to Michael Gbinije.
With Joseph's transfer, that leaves nine scholarship players on the roster next season, including 2016 signees Matthew Moyer and Tyus Battle.That leaves two scholarships available for next year. It is likely that at least one of these scholarships will be used on a 2016 big man to add front court depth or on a graduate transfer such as Columbia's Grant Mullins, whom Syracuse has been in touch with.
