What looked like an easy route to a 5-1 record for the Orange ended up becoming a scrappy defensive fest after trailing Northeastern for most of the game. After clinging to a one point halftime lead, Syracuse outlasted the Huskies to win by a final score of 62-56 inside the Carrier Dome.
Northeastern came out the gates scorching hot from deep. They made seven 3s in the first half. If it weren’t for Joseph Girard and Marek Dolezaj coming out strong for the Orange to start too, Northeastern could have ran away with this one. Jahmyl Telford was a man on a mission in the first half and Syracuse had no answer for him.
For some reason it felt like Syracuse couldn’t knock down a three in the first half. They shot a horrific 22%. They are truly following the saying live by the three die by the three this season. This explains why they lead all ACC teams in made threes per game. Most of the Orange’s buckets came inside with Dolezaj and Quincy Guerrier.
By halftime, despite Syracuse’s shooting woes, Joe Girard had himself a good shooting half scoring 12 points. Jahmyl Telford had 11 of his own but they still trailed by one.
Coming out the half you would expect the Orange to bounce back and start blowing the Huskies out … right? Wrong. They came out the half lackadaisical on offense and Northeastern took advantage. The Huskies began dissecting the zone and having their way on the other end. They led for most of the beginning stages of the second half until the Candyman had a say.
Guerrier has just been a different animal this season. He had a double double early on in this one and was keeping the energy up for Syracuse to get back in the game.
In the second half, Northeastern player Tyson Walker had to exit this matchup with an apparent injury when his team was still leading. He would not return.
Defense was the key to closing out this game for the Orange. At about the 1:55 minute mark Joe Girard got a steal and and and one on the other end. Then not too long after the Huskies turned the ball over with 1:40 left in the game, Syracuse inched closer and closer to the win despite a few mistakes down the stretch.
After constant back and forth of defensive stops, the Huskies found a way to get themselves down 4 with 22 seconds left. It was 60-56.
Boeheim’s squad had one job left. Ice the game. Kadary Richmond did just that at the free throw line, making both his free throws and getting a 62-56 lead. The Orange got a stop after and that was the game.
