Game Recap

A late follow by Michael Gbinije put the Orange up for good with 22 seconds left.

In the late game from the Midwest Regional in Chicago, the Gonzaga Bulldogs came out firing against the Syracuse Orange 2-3 zone. Kyle Wiltjer didn't waste any time and knocked down two quick threes getting Gonzaga got off to a 13-4 lead. Jim Boeheim had to call an early timeout at the 16:14 mark in the first half.

During the Gonzaga run, Tyler Roberson looked to energize Syracuse with a monster put-back dunk, but Gonzaga rebutted with a quick bucket by Domantas Sabonis on the other end.

Syracuse fought tooth and nail to get back in the game by forcing 10 first half turnovers. The Orange were able to claw back to within one point at halftime on a pair of Trevor Cooney free throws.

In the second half Syracuse got off to a 6-0 run behind Cooney and Michael Gbinije to take a five-point lead. Gonzaga fought back to take the lead but Syracuse wouldn't go away without a fight.

Syracuse took the lead late on a Gbinije follow layup with 22 seconds left to put the Orange up 61-60. On the ensuing possession Cooney stole the ball and was called out of bounds. Replay confirmed that he did not step out but unfortunately that type of call is unable to get overturned. Fortunately for Syracuse, Tyler Lydon came up with a huge block and was fouled.

Lydon knocked down both free throws of the one-and-one to put Syracuse up three. Sabonis threw up a three-quarter court shot that came up short and Syracuse advanced. The Orange will now play Virginia on Sunday in the Elite Eight for a shot at the Final Four.
