This story has been floating around for a bit, but Wednesday it gained some legs as Syracuse.com's Mike Waters reported the Syracuse Orange basketball program is looking at possibly adding former Memphis Tigers guard/soon-to-be graduate transfer up for recruitment, Antonio Barton.
Barton, a 6-foot-2 guard, is expected to graduate from Memphis in June, which makes him eligible to transfer and play in the 2013-14 season -- yes, that is this upcoming season.
Now, if Barton does pick Syracuse, which is interested in adding him, it would create an impressive logjam in the backcourt, as he would compete for playing time against freshman Tyler Ennis, redshirt junior Trevor Cooney, transfer sophomore Michael Gbinije and freshman Ron Patterson.
As Waters pointed out in his article, Syracuse does have an extra scholarship to offer Barton if he decided he wants to be an Orange. Of course, thats means a walk-on will not be rewarded for his hard work, which usually happens with an extra scholarship.
Understand that Barton was not a stud for the Tigers, who made it to the NCAA Tournament last season, but he would provide some veteran leadership to a backcourt that would have very little.
The choice of Syracuse over Maryland, Kansas State and Texas A&M -- the other schools in the list of snagging him -- would provide a nice final landing spot for a senior that is probably looking to make a Final Four run in his final season of eligibility.
