Game Recap

The Syracuse Orange picked up a quadrant one win against Louisville on Wednesday.

The Syracuse Orange picked up an ever-so-important win at home Wednesday night over the Louisville Cardinals. The victory over the Cardinals gets Syracuse its third quadrant one win of the year at a time when the Orange really needed a big win. The top three teams in the ACC still loom large on the schedule.

Louisville as important as any other win

The Duke win for Syracuse is undoubtedly the biggest of the season, but given the potential asterisk that is the omission of Tre Jones and Cam Reddish, the Orange really needed to solidify itself with another quality win or two.

The Ohio State win will still be quadrant one, but the Buckeyes have slipped of late.

This win was huge for Syracuse’s NCAA Tournament hopes as a loss to Louisville would have surely required a win against Duke, UNC or Virginia. That’s a tall order to steal even one of those games.

Zoned Out

The 2-3 zone came back in a big way, holding Louisville to just 25.9 percent shooting from the floor and 21.4 percent shooting from deep. The Cardinals also committed 13 turnovers which Syracuse was able to score 16 points off of.

Most impressively for Syracuse? Louisville made only 14 field goals all night, shocking when considering that only eight made baskets for the Cards came inside the three-point line.

Big three bounce back

Last game against NC State, the only Syracuse players in double-digit scoring were Frank Howard and Marek Dolezaj. Tonight, the big three of Tyus Battle, Elijah Hughes and Oshae Brissett bounced back to score 11, 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Battle or Hughes didn’t shoot it necesaily well, but Brissett looked dominant in spurts. He knocked down two shots from range to boot.

Folly Frank?

After a 21-point outing against NC State, Howard failed to score against Louisville. He took just one shot in 11 minutes of play. Aside from one bad turnover to begin the second half, he didn’t do anything terrible. While some might have reached in an over-reactionary take to suggest the Orange went on a 10-0 run without him in there, Syracuse is going to need Howard through this final push.

Divin’ Dolezaj

Marek Dolezaj is absolutely allergic to standing on two foot. He spends more time on the floor than a mop. Dolezaj once again made hustle plays to earn extra possessions that don’t show up in the box score, but he was pretty good in that regard too.

The sophomore from Slovakia registered 6 points, 9 rebounds and an assist. He drew a charge in the game’s final moments.

That’s your Buddy, pal

Buddy Boeheim has given the Syracuse offense an added dynamic this season with his ability to stretch it. Boehiem scored 14 points on four made 3s. He had 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block too. An all around solid game from Buddy.

Braswell cameo

Robert Braswell continues to impress in his limited action. While in came in garbage time, the frosh scored on a shot just inside the paint. Braswell played a surprising seven minutes against NC State and earned three steals in that game. Syracuse might have something in Braswell in the coming years.
