Random thoughts from Day 1 of the 2017 ACC Tournament

Well Day 1 of the ACC Tournament is in the books, and there were several story lines.

newaccbrandClemson suddenly has won 3 games in a row, and may be in the process of saving Brad Brownell’s job after defeating NC State. Their penetrating guards could really cause Duke problems Wednesday. They nearly knocked off Duke in Cameron earlier in the year.

Mark Gottfried is officially finished at NC State. Now the the Wolfpack can move on to hiring Kevin Keatts out of UNC-Wilmington if the Archie Miller sweepstakes falls apart. Our last two podcast guests @_EthanMoore and @JamesIV1978  have me convinced of Keatts.

Boston College last won a basketball game on January 11th, and provided a fairly easy matchup for Wake Forest. Wake Forest was really the story of the day. The Deacs now 19-12 are a lock for the NCAA tournament. It is truly remarkable how Danny Manning has rebuilt Wake Forest following the disastrous Jeff Bzdelik days. Wake Forest can play without pressure in what should be a very competitive game with Virginia Tech Wednesday. That’s looks like a great 7/10 NCAA matchup, but it’s Wednesday at the ACC Tournament.

Georgia Tech and Pitt played a who is the less bad team tonight. Pitt was the less bad team. The Panthers have talent, but their random shot offense will be no match for Virginia Wednesday. Georgia Tech came up empty handed in every important game except Pitt at home in the last 2 weeks. Their severly limited roster struggles to score in the best of circumstances, and when they get out of their offense it can make scoring just about impossible.

That’s what we saw Tuesday, and Georgia Tech now sit and hopes they make the NIT.
