At least it was fun.

It wasn't nearly the wire-to-wire blowout that most expected, but LSU still topped Syracuse, 34-24, at the Carrier Dome on Saturday, handing the Orange their first loss of 2015.

Syracuse never held a lead in the game but kept it close throughout. The Orange trailed 7-3 at halftime, 17-10 midway through the third quarter and 24-17 in the fourth quarter before the Tigers pulled away.

In the loss, SU's sophomore walk-on quarterback Zack Mahoney finished 16-of-38 for 154 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He didn't show much of anything during the first half but came out firing after halftime. He hit Brisly Estime in stride for a 40-yard score to pull the Orange within a touchdown in the third quarter and then found Ben Lewis for a two-yard touchdown early in the fourth, again pulling Syracuse within seven.

But after LSU scored on its ensuing drive, Mahoney was intercepted by Deion Jones midway through the fourth quarter, all but securing the Tigers' victory. Mahoney would throw his third touchdown, to Dontae Strickland, in garbage time of the fourth quarter.

For LSU, Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette was as good as advertised. He ran for 244 yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also had a would-be third touchdown, which was for 87 yards, called back in the third quarter due to an illegal formation.

Now at 3-1, Syracuse enters a much-needed bye week, if only because of its significant number of injuries. We'll have plenty more postgame coverage later today and into tomorrow, but leave your thoughts here for now.
