Not awesome.

Just 30 minutes before the start of the first official practice of the 2018 season, the Louisville football team had to serve up its first bit of bad news.

Wide receiver Jaylen Smith underwent an emergency appendectomy on Friday morning, according to a statement released by U of L just before 3 p.m.

“We were fortunate to catch this early and anticipate a full recovery,” said Louisville coach Bobby Petrino. “Jaylen is doing well, and we look forward to him returning to the practice field as soon as possible.”

Smith was the lone Cardinal named to the preseason All-ACC Team last month. A year ago, he led Louisville with 60 catches for 980 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing three games with a wrist injury.

The typical recovery time after an appendectomy is 2-4 weeks, but that’s for people looking to return to “normal activity.” My guess is that Jaylen likely sits out the Alabama game, and then probably the Indiana State game as well. While it would obviously be a massive bummer to go into a game against the best team in the country without our top weapon, the good news is that the receiver position might be the deepest on the roster.
