It’s official: The Louisville Cardinals are the new No. 1 team in college basketball.

U of L received 48 of the possible 64 first-place votes to become the fourth team to grace the top of the AP poll already this season. The team that received the most first-place votes besides Louisville is the next one the Cardinals will face.

Michigan, which pays a visit to the KFC Yum Center on Tuesday, received nine first-place votes after knocking off Iowa State, North Carolina and Gonzaga to win the Battle 4 Atlantis last week. The 7-0 Wolverines went from unranked all the way up to No. 4 in the poll. That jump is tied for the largest in the 70-year history of the poll.

Here’s the full top 25 for the first week of December:

This marks just the third time in program history that Louisville has been No. 1 in the AP poll. The weeks of March 16, 2009 and Jan. 14, 2013 mark the other two (the AP does not do a poll at the end of the NCAA tournament).

No. 1 vs. No. 4 Tuesday night with the winner likely to become/remain the No. 1 team in the country a week later. Oh my.
