The University of Louisville has officially filed its appeal of some of the recent penalties levied against its men’s basketball program by the NCAA. Rick Pitino plans to file his own appeal of the 5-game ACC suspension that he was hit with.
WAVE-3 has obtained a copy of the appeal, which was filed on Wednesday. You can read it in its entirety here.
In the 65-page appeal, U of L argues that the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions abandoned that longstanding practices when hitting Louisville with a punishment that includes the vacation of wins, titles and money earned from 2010-2014. They state that the COI ignored the fact that the student athletes in question were not culpable for the transgressions that occurred, received negligible benefits, and would have undoubtedly obtained their reinstatement if these transgressions had been known while they were playing for the Cardinals. U of L also argues that the COI failed to take into account several mitigating circumstances, including the severity of the punishments that U of L self-imposed back in 2016.
U of L goes on to state that, at a minimum, the penalties levied against the 2011-12 and 2012-13 teams need to be reversed because there were no proven ineligible players on either team. The appeal ends with this:
CONCLUSION
The COI’s vacation and financial penalties should be reversed. At a minimum, the vacation and financial penalties imposed in connection with the 2011-12 and 2012-13 men’s basketball seasons should be reversed.
