True freshman Caleb Farley, a recruited athlete, will play wide receiver for the Hokies this fall

The Virginia Tech Football Program announced on Monday that true freshman Caleb Farley will play wide receiver for the Hokies this fall.

Farley, who was a 6’3″, 180 lbs. 3-star member of the 2017 recruiting class, enrolled early at Virginia Tech in order to take part in spring practice. After being recruited as an athlete, Farley began the spring as a defensive back, while also working a bit on the offensive side of the football.

The coaching staff raved over Farley’s versatility, with Justin Fuente suggesting on multiple occasions that Farley could play some offense, as well as defense, this fall.

During the spring game, Farley made a name for himself at receiver, leaving all ideas of playing defense in the back of many fans’ minds. What came to the forefront was the impact that Farley could make on the offensive side of the ball, as he took a majority of the snaps with the first team offense, lining up opposite of Cam Phillips as the number two receiver.

Farley showed his ability to make big plays in the passing game, catching two passes for 61 yards against former All-ACC cornerback Brandon Facyson. The rising senior was taken to task by the redshirt freshman, as Farley ran crisp routes and showed a knack of finding separation from Facyson when the ball was in the air.

In addition, Farley was the recipient of a handful of carries on sweep plays in the running game, which displayed his explosiveness in the open field. While it was only the spring game, the true freshman certainly seems like he can be the dynamic playmaker on offense to pair with Cam Phillips come the fall.

As such, Coach Fuente and his staff are hoping that the spring game was not an aberration, but instead, a sign of positive things to come from a new contributor on offense in the fall.
