So here we are, since the moment FSU was snubbed for the CFP at 13-0, they’ve gone 7-17 (3-13), with no bowls, and a 0-6 record against rivals Florida, Miami, and Clemson. Their ACC record is a conference worst. The program is a corpse, and everybody knows it. They just lost by 40-21 to a Florida team that won 4 games.
If not for the lightning in a bottle win over Alabama, there wouldn’t be one positive thing you could say about the Florida State program.
Look, I actually think Mike Norevell isn’t a terrible coach. He did have back-to-back top 10 seasons at Florida State, and won 38 games in 4 years at Memphis, but the fit just isn’t there at Florida State.
With a second straight embarrassing season, the powers that be at Florida State retained Mike Norvell. Nobody was happier than all of Florida State’s future opponents.
That’s not usually a good sign.
Where does Florida State go from here? They have a top 20 recruiting class coming in, and there’s always the portal for quicker fixes. This doesn’t seem like any quick fix, though. Multiple ACC schools have flown past Florida State. In fact, if we’re just going by record, all of them have.
Now, it is true that FSU has a higher ceiling than just about anyone in the ACC, but it seems Florida State has to tear everything down and build it back up.
I don’t know how you do that with Norvell back. Just ask Nebraska how hard it is to get back to relevance once you slip from elite status.
You have to go back to 1973-74 when Florida State won 1 game, to find a lower point in Florida State football history.
