While other Carolina athletes (and other college quarterbacks) are grabbing headlines for all the wrong reasons, Bryn Renner has been quietly flying under the radar, racking up some positive reviews. When he showed up on the Maxwell Award watch list, it was nice but basically meaningless — 75 other players made that list, and 31 of them were quarterbacks. Renner also spent four days as a counselor with the Manning Passing Academy, a high school skills camp that also doubles as a place for scouts to check out said college counselor's talents. And it turns out, his performance drew good reviews from analyst Mike Maycock:
"He probably is the most polished of all the quarterbacks I saw," Mayock said. "Great feet, bigger kid than I thought -- (6-foot-3), 220 (pounds) -- ball comes out beautifully. His father is a highly recognized high school coach, so it doesn't surprise me that he is so polished."
Renner enters his senior year third in Carolina history in both passing yards at 6,456 yards and passing touchdowns with 54. He needs 2,921 yards and 14 touchdowns, respectively. Every passing record at UNC is well within his grasp, so I figured I'd chart exactly what he needs to accomplish. And then I realized by doing this I'd just be inviting the Fates or Jadeveon Clowney to prematurely end his season, so perhaps we'll wait until after the South Carolina game to make that a regular feature. Until then, he'll have to be happy with his current UNC records for completion percentage (game and career), passing attempts (season, tied with T. J. Yates), and passing touchdowns (game and season). That's a pretty decent start.
