ACC Final Football Grades for 2012-2013

All the ACC football games are over. It’s time to give a brief review of the season and hand out each ACC team a grade.

Clemson Tigers (11-2)  - A

Despite losing to arch rival South Carolina for a fourth straight year, the Tigers dominated everyone in the ACC not named Florida State. The Chick Fil A bowl win over SEC power LSU gave Clemson nationwide credibility and probably top 10 finish.

Florida State (12-2) – A-

How does a 12-2 year, an ACC Championship and Orange Bowl win not warrant a full A? When you lose to a mediocre NC State team you had no business losing to. That said FSU still took steps forward with their first conference title in more than 5 years.

North Carolina (8-4) – B+

Larry Fedora did a fantastic keep North Carolina motivated and focused without the possibility of a postseason. The Tar Heels could have easily just went through the motions this year.

Duke (6-7) – B

When you make your first bowl since 1994 like Duke you get a B. Had they been able to finish over .500 they would have gotten an A.

Miami (7-5) – B-

Al Golden has the Hurricanes on the right track. The Canes were in the thick of the ACC Coastal all year and would have been the ACC Title game had they not self-imposed a post-season ban. Now about that defense…

Georgia Tech (7-7) – C+

The season ending Sun Bowl win over USC, was Georgia Tech’s first bowl win since 2004. They also won the ACC Coastal division. There were some big highlights, but home blowout losses to Middle Tennessee St. and BYU nearly derailed the season.

Virginia Tech (7-6) – C

The Hokies were precariously close to getting an F on the season given the pre-season expectations, but a late winning winning streak and bowl win over Rutgers gives them a passing grade barely. Now time to go fire some coaches on offense.

NC State (7-6) – C

The Wolfpack lost 4 of their last 6 games, and barely showed up in a bowl game loss to Vanderbilt. Well I guess there was that win over Florida State.

Wake Forest (5-7) – C-

Was it really that long ago the Deacs were making bowl games and competing for ACC Titles? They seem to be falling further and further behind the elite of the ACC.

Maryland (4-8) – D

Randy Edsall has won 6 games in two years in Maryland. I know the Terps lost a slew of quarterbacks, but is this program a mess or what?

Virginia (4-8) – D

A 6 game game losing streak, a quarterback controversy and only 4 wins. Somehow the Cavaliers still beat Penn State, Miami, and NC State. Who are we kidding it was a forgettable season.

Boston College (2-10) – F

The Eagles had 1 ACC win, and now they have a new coach. There’s only one to go that’s up.
