World Series Game 1 in Milwaukee, Plus Two NBA Coin Flips

The headliner: Game 1 of the World Series, and the sims see runs.

World Series

8:00 PM ET, American Family Field, and the wait is over. Rays at Brewers opens the Fall Classic between two franchises with zero titles, and the GameSim projection has doubled its sample since Wednesday: Milwaukee 4.7, Tampa Bay 3.8, across 100 simulations. The direction never wavered. Brewers, by about a run.

My take: this is the best pitching matchup of the postseason on paper, and the sims do not care. ESPN's odds preview has Drew Rasmussen starting for Tampa Bay against Jacob Misiorowski for Milwaukee, a Game 1 moneyline of Brewers -164 and Rays +135, and a total of just 6.0. The GameSim projection totals 8.56 runs. That is more than two and a half runs over the market number, which means one of them is wrong by a lot, and nine innings settle it tonight. The market and the model agree on the favorite: the series is Brewers -160 and Rays +140, Polymarket prices Milwaukee at 62.2 percent, and ESPN's expert first look ran its own 10,000 simulations to land on Brewers 59 percent. Everybody leans Milwaukee. The fight is about the runs, and the sims are picking it.

Friday's NBA slate: 12 games, two true coin flips

Two games tonight are as tight as the model gets. Hawks at Hornets: Charlotte 110.7, Atlanta 110.5, a two-tenths-of-a-point margin across 360 simulations. The projected stats have Brandon Miller at 20.3 points and 5.0 rebounds for Charlotte, with Nickeil Alexander-Walker at 19.0 points for Atlanta. Raptors at Wizards: Washington 116.8, Toronto 115.9, a one-point call, with Anthony Davis projected at 21.5 points and 9.8 rebounds for Washington against Kawhi Leonard's 18.0 for Toronto.

My take: when the sims call a game within a point, the winner pick is a lottery ticket and the value lives in the totals and the player projections. Run the matchup, check the total, and let the 360 runs talk you into it or out of it.

The statement games: Memphis, Boston, and the Lakers by double digits

Then the other end of the board. Grizzlies at Warriors: Memphis 120.1, Golden State 102.9, a 17-point call. Knicks at Celtics: Boston 118.9, New York 104.9, Boston by 14 at home. Clippers at Lakers: the Lakers 121.1, the Clippers 106.0, a 15-point crosstown call. My take: the sims are not respecting the home dogs in these three, and in October that usually means one of them is wrong loudly. Keep an eye on the margins, because two nights ago the model nailed its two big blowout calls.

Two more worth a look: Pistons at Heat, Detroit 112.1 to 110.7, and Rockets at Spurs, Houston 110.8 to 108.3. Tight games, live dogs, the usual Friday chaos.

On the ice and the gridiron: the Avalanche lean, and an ACC toss-up

Lightning at Avalanche: Colorado 4.8, Tampa Bay 3.9, across 360 simulations. Two contenders, one clear home lean. And in Friday night college ball, Duke at Virginia: Duke 23.6, Virginia 22.0, across 1,000 simulations, the biggest sample on the board. A 1.6-point ACC game with a thousand runs behind it. That is the kind of number worth building a Friday around.

The report card: 4-for-4 on winners, and two margins that got away

The full ledger from last night's featured slate. The winner calls went 4-for-4: the Bears beat the Patriots 30-24 in Chicago, right where the sims had them, and App State held off James Madison 34-31, landing one point off the projected 33.1. The Patriots' 24 was nearly exact against the projected 24.5. That is the model doing its job.

Then the two that got away. Liberty won at Kennesaw State 34-6, but the sims called a field-goal game, Liberty 30.5, Kennesaw State 26.9. And Memphis outlasted East Carolina 41-34 after the sims had it Memphis 29.7, ECU 29.3, a half-point coin flip. The winner was right, the "within a point" line was not, and a 75-point shootout blew past the projected 59. State the misses plainly: the totals in those two games were the miss, and the totals are exactly where the sims earn their keep on the next card.

GameSim line: Brewers take Game 1 behind the home bats with the total clearing 6.0, the two NBA coin flips come down to the last possession, and Memphis, Boston, and the Lakers all win by double digits.

All scores above are MyGameSim projections from the simulations run so far, and none of tonight's games have been played yet. Last night the featured calls went 4-for-4 on winners with two totals that got away. Run your own sims, check the totals and projected stats, and tell me where the model is wrong tonight.
