Will's World: Larkin's Best Choice Would Be To Go Pro

With the deadline to declare for the NBA draft just days away, one of the names that is currently undeclared is Miami's Shane Larkin. The sophomore had a season that led him to a spot on the All-ACC first team, and made him a contender for ACC Player of the Year. Larkin averaged 14.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. Larkin also shot 47% from the field, and 40% from three.

What makes Larkin's decision difficult is the fact that while he may not be ready to play in the NBA, his draft stock is at what could be the highest point it will be. He was an integral part of one of the most successful teams in Miami basketball history, and six of those players will not be back next season. He could come back, and possibly be the favorite to be ACC Player of the Year next season. But with a new cast of characters around him, he could be asked to do a lot more, and maybe he isn't capable of carrying a team more than he did last year. But he could also end up carrying the team on his shoulders like Erick Green did for Virginia Tech last season, although I believe Larkin would put up better all around numbers than Green did. But he probably wouldn't score on the level Green did for the Hokies. Another thing that would sway things towards Larkin's early entry is the lack of depth in the draft class. There aren't many big time players in the draft, and he has a shot at being a first round pick, which would mean guaranteed money.

With all of these things being said, I feel like Larkin's best option would be to go pro. To me, coming back is too much of a risk for his future draft stock, although I will not criticize him if he does stay. I would understand if he stayed if he felt like he wasn't ready to go pro. I just feel like he would be leaving a lot of money on the table he may not be able to get later. But if anything, we can make a drinking game during Miami games next season for every time they show his dad on TV.
