The Cardinal defense continues to be one of the worst in the country.
It was yet another record-setting day for a team going up against the Louisville defense.
Wake Forest racked up 627 yards of offense, the second most in school history, on its way to a 42-32 win over the Cardinals Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem. It was the first time the Demon Deacons eclipsed the 600-yard mark on offense since 1968.
Leading the offensive charge for the Demon Deacons was freshman wide receiver Greg Dortch, who hauled in 10 passes for 167 yards and a school-record four touchdowns. Senior quarterback John Wolford also had a career day, hitting on 28 of 34 passes for 461 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions.
Yet another Wake Forest player who set a career record on Saturday was Matthew Colburn, the former Louisville commit who made national headlines when he was asked to greyshirt by the Cardinals in 2015. The junior running back carried the ball 24 times for a career-high 134 yards.
Despite his team’s dismal performance, Lamar Jackson once again blessed the college football world with his talents. Jackson threw for 330 yards and a touchdown while chalking up 161 yards and three more scores on the ground.
Last week’s win felt good because any win would have felt good, but now we have to call it what it was: An uneven performance that ended with a last-second win over a 2-5 team. Louisville faced a more competent and inspired opponent this week, and that opponent handed them their ass.
Any pipe dream of this team winning out and salvaging the season is now officially out the window. The focus now becomes making sure that you win one of your last three games and extend your consecutive bowl appearance streak to eight years. Beating Kentucky would be cool (as always), especially in what could be Jackson’s final regular season game. But outside that, the opportunities for good vibes are minimal.
That shouldn’t be the case, but here we are.
