Virginia adds a hoops commit in 6'7" DeAndre Hunter

I was reading through various post-football meltdown threads on the message boards last night when news broke that DeAndre Hunter committed to the Virginia basketball program, which means that the kid already has a knack for turning up in the clutch.

Hunter is a 6’7” 190 pound swingman from Philly who is classified as a four star by every ranking service and falls somewhere between the 67th (Rivals) and 107th (24-7) best recruit in the country. He’s long limbed (a 72-inch wingspan), can handle the ball, and possesses a trusty jumper with range. His body type kind of reminds me of Isaiah Wilkins or Akil Mitchell, which makes me wonder if his future is adding explosiveness off the dribble and staying on the wing, getting swoll and moving to the four, or becoming a kind of hybrid like Wilkins or Evan Nolte. Watching how he runs and handles the ball with both hands, I’m inclined to say he stays outside. I said no one will score again when Mamadi Diakite committed and joined Austin Nichols’s supreme shot blocking instincts inside, and now we’ve got DeAndre Hunter’s Kris Hunter arms orbiting the perimeter. The Pack Line appears to be in good hands.

Hunter is a little bit of a late bloomer in the rankings because he missed most of his sophomore year with an injury, but he’s been steadily rising. Saturday was his official visit, and I’m guessing a combination of the camaraderie consistently shown by Kyle Guy, Ty Jerome, and Jay Huff from his class and the atmosphere surrounding the entire University this weekend sealed the deal. Just to see it in writing again, the 2016-17 season will mark the beginning of Virginia eligibility for Kyle Guy, Ty Jerome, DeAndre Hunter, Mamadi Diakite, and Austin Nichols. Tony Bennett is bringing in talent, and the best thing about it is that these are team-first guys that feel like they’re building something for the long term. These guys will be marinating in our system while others in our conference are cycling through several sets of one and dones, which makes me think that one of these years, our collection of experienced talent will break through and do something special. Stay tuned.
