UNC has announced the signing of a 17 member recruiting class, the second under head coach Larry Fedora. The full list of players can be found at GoHeels.com. Here is a breakdown of the recruit rankings by the prominent recruiting services.

Due to NCAA sanctions UNC was limited to only 19 initial counters. Heading into the day, UNC had 18 commitments but Durham Hillside's Korrie Wiggins, who committed to UNC almost a year ago, ended up signing with Clemson. And yes, things like this is why I ignore football recruiting until today and only then give it a cursory glance. Obviously it would be better to sign more players but the NCAA penalties mean UNC will have one more recruiting cycle with the scholarship reductions in place.
Inside Carolina, as always, has a nice breakdown of the class with details on the individual players. Overall, it is a decent class which Larry Fedora called "solid" and one that fills multiple needs. The phrase of the day for UNC's class has been "quality over quantity" due in part to it being a smaller than normal class. Two of the names that will get a lot of press are QB Mitch Tribisky and RB T.J. Logan. Tribisky is already enrolled and with Marquise Williams not around this spring, should get some reps during spring practice. Logan had a big senior season for Northern Guilford winning a state title in a game where he ran for 510 yards and 8 TDs. With Gio Bernard off to the NFL, there is certainly an opportunity for Logan to contribute. On the defensive side, UNC added a pair of defensive linemen, Dajaun Drennon and Greg Webb, who were also teammates in high school. In the secondary UNC added safety Desmond Lawrence.
Overall it is a nice shot of talent into the program at key positions. Going by the recruiting rankings it is not overwhelming talent and the three services cited above vary somewhat on how good this class is with the truth probably somewhere in the middle. In all likelihood, only few members of this class will make an impact during their first year on campus which is perfectly fine. That does put much of the focus on player development and coaching. At present, I think this staff has and will do a good job in both of those areas. In short, this was a good day for UNC and as Larry Fedora pointed out earlier, the program is trending in the right direction despite the NCAA restrictions.
