The North Carolina football team opened preseason practice today officially starting the second season of the Larry Fedora era. Here are some tidbits as the ramp up to the season begins in earnest.

  • Drew Davis, son of former Tar Heel head coach Butch Davis, is transferring from the program. Davis was a preferred walk-on to the team last year despite the fact UNC had fired his father just prior to the 2011 season. Unfortunately, Davis was buried on the depth chart and was likely never going to see the field. Davis will transfer to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas where he would be eligible to play immediately.
  • Also at the News and Observer, Andrew Carter with "four areas to watch" as practice opens. As expected three of the four are: defense, the offensive line and replacing Gio Bernard.
  • Meet the Heels will happen this Saturday, August 3rd from 4-6 PM at Kenan Stadium. More details can be found here.
  • The USA Today Coaches Poll is out and while UNC is not ranked, the Tar Heels did receive 19 votes. Only two ACC teams, Clemson and FSU were ranked. Miami and Virginia Tech were just ahead of UNC in the "receiving votes" category.
