UNC Football: Four Tar Heel Newcomers to Watch

North Carolina has several players in the redshirt freshman/true freshman group that have the ability to make an impact on the team.  For example Mitch Trubisky will see action at quarterback. Much has been written about that position therefore I thought i would highlight a few players where UNC needs someone to provide some depth and and quality play.

Greg Webb and Dajaun Drennon are two defensive linemen many felt might play right away last fall however the defensive line is one of the harder jumps from high school to college. Both have a year in the program and the weight room which should set them up to to be successful.  Webb’s development may be needed sooner than Drennon because the Tar Heels have reliable pass rushers in Norkeithus Otis, Mikey Bart and Junior Gnonkonde.

Freeman Jones is an all american kicker.  If you watched North Carolina last year anything outside an extra point was a mystery.  This will be a much needed addition to the Tar Heel special teams.  Thomas Hibbard and Jones could team up to be the best kicking unit in the ACC if Jones performs as we have seen in the past. Thomas Moore was thrust into action with Barth’s injury and will continue to help out with kickoff and extra points.

MJ Stewart is the most intriguing true freshman because he enrolled in the spring and has the athleticism and size the play both in space and give run support. He is a true hybrid safety that I believe is going to be a special player at UNC because of his flexibility in the 4-2-5 scheme.
