There was nothing much that happened in the last national basketball season of 2019-2020 due to the global challenges experienced as a result of the pandemic. Despite all of the unfortunate events in the last season, a huge number of basketball teams are brightly looking forward to this new season of 2020-2021.

The month of April was full of activities, with recruits joining the teams and graduates transferring. There is still room for transfer as the team earnestly waits for this season's draft in late July or early August. Despite all these, we have prepared our list of the best five teams.

Virginia

In the latest rankings for sports for students, Virginia has been performing well. The team is currently ranked at 15 with 584 points and this is a great improvement compared to its previous performance. In the last ACC play, Virginia scored seven straight wins and this greatly raised hopes for the team's good performance in this season’s games. Following the ACC games last season, Virginia was the 2nd highest-ranked team in a poll that ranked the top 25 best teams.

In the 2019-2020 games, Virginia received 11 wins in a total of 12 games. The team only lost Mamadi Diakite and gained Sam Hauser, who will perfectly fill Diakite’s position. They might have lost in terms of rim protection, but to the team, it was a gain in terms of shot creation.

In an interview, the team’s coach Tony Bennett said he didn’t think they were too good, but he believes when they play right. According to him, their last win was a display of who they are. The team was not very good at the offensive at times, but Tony seems to have a remedy for that already. He has set Jay Huff, Kihei Clark and Casey Morsell up and running in terms of practice.

Kentucky

In the new season, Kentucky has some of the best team members and this gives great hope to the team’s head coach John Calipari. In the team are team members like Davion Mintz, Isaiah Jackson, and Brandon Boston. The team is ranked in the list of top 20 teams in the 2020-2021 rankings. Although the team underwent a significant degree of roster turnover, it is still ranked high.

In the team’s draft are Ashton Hagans and Tyrese Maxey, and Nick Richards is also expected to go pro. With Nick on the list and probably Immanuel Quickley, the team is likely to have a very different appearance. It will not be short of skill since the two are scorers.

In the guard will be Devin Askew and he will have Keion Brooks to help him inside the field. The team has three fresh recruits, which means they will have plenty of responsibilities, but this is a good mix for a team that wants to be successful, although some critiques might have reservations.

For more than 100 years, college sports have gone through tremendous changes as time and seasons change. Illinois

From the last games, Illinois has a record of 20-6 and they might be headed for a landslide win in the next season. What might be more surprising is the fact that the team has been away from NCAA tournaments for eight years, yet they are ranked top-3 nationally and projections show that they might take position 1 in the NCAA Tournament.

Illinois has some of the best players in the likes of Adam miller, Kofi Cockburn, Ayo Dosunmu, and Trent Frazier in the starters. Their bench has Coleman Hawkins, Andre Curbelo, Giorgi Bezhanishvili, and Da’Monte Williams.

Michigan

Michigan is ranked number 4 in the AP’s top 20 rankings. For the 104th year, Michigan was in the Big Ten Conference in this 2020-2021 season. Under their head coach Juwan Howard, the team finished with a 23-5 and 14-3 conference record and this was the biggest win since 2014.

The fact that Michigan made it to the first big ten championships was trigger enough to send fear to many teams that didn’t expect Michigan to make it to the top. They now have 1 seed in the 2020-2021 NCAA’s Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Michigan’s departure list included team members Colin Castleton, Jon Teske, Cole Bajema, Zavier Simpson, and David DeJulius. The list of incomers had Mike Smith and Chaundee Brown.

Villanova

For close to 40 years, Villanova has won 3 times only in the NCAA national championships. Their first win within this period was in 1985, and after going quiet for 30 years, they resurfaced again and won the 2016 and 2018 national championships, respectively.

There was a big hope that they would win the 2019-2020 season but that is still live in this season. In the NCAA championship, Villanova has 1 seed. In their team are skilled players like Collin Gillespie, Justin Moore, Caleb Daniels, and Bryan Antoine.

Conclusion

The NCCA’s 2021 Division 1 Men’s Basketball tournament was the determinant of the teams that would play in the 2020-2021 national championship. The edition, which started in mid-march and concluded in early April, was an elimination tournament consisting of 68 teams. The March-April tournament was a game-changer for many teams, with some losing and others climbing to the top 20 teams in the AP Top 20 Teams ranking.
