The sport of football is interwoven with English history dating as far back as medieval times. Documents by William Fitzstephen and King Edward II of England, among others, provide indisputable evidence of the game's presence within the territory.

English Football, thus, is embellished with a rich background story. England boasts of the first football club ever established (Sheffield F.C), the oldest national overseeing association (known as the Football Association) and is respected for passing the first laws of the football game, among others. Football started getting moulded into what it was now in 1863 when the first set of modern rules was established.

In fact, international football is said to have officially commenced when teams from Scotland and England met in a match at South London sometime in the mid-nineteenth century. As of now, English Football encompasses over 40,000 clubs—the largest for any country.

It involves countries from Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. The top-flight league in the country, The English Premier League, is the most-watched league in the world and one of the richest. England's national team is also among the only eight teams ever to win the World Cup.

Football Association Cup (FA Cup)

The Football Association Challenge Cup, simply known as the FA Cup, is the oldest national knockout competition and even the oldest national football competition in the world! It's currently named after its headline sponsor and is known as the Emirates FA Cup. It's one of England's biggest competitions. History and Overview of the FA Cup

Following the establishment of the Football Association and publishing of the first modern football rules known as "Laws of the Game" in 1863, a football competition was proposed to the FA committee on 20 July 1871 in which all clubs in the association participated.

It eventually kicked off in November 1871 and was won by Wanderers FC after Thirteen games. The competition continued to expand and now features K.O. and qualifying rounds. You may obtain Semi Final FA Cup tickets for this year's ongoing competition.

The current format of the club is open to all clubs across Levels 1-9 of English Football. The first eight levels automatically qualify and are given a bye until later rounds. Fixtures are drawn randomly. The competition involves a total of 12 rounds, with the first six being qualifying rounds. The competition proper starts during the 7th round when the Level 3 and 4 clubs join the competition.

The final of the competition has always been held at Wembley Stadium since it opened in 1923 (except during 2001 to 2006, during which Wembley was being rebuilt). Arsenal is the most successful club in the competition, with 14 titles to its name. The winner of the FA Cup automatically qualifies for the UEFA Europa League for the next season and the FA Community Shield, a friendly between the English Premier League winner and the FA Cup winner.

Jimmy Ross holds the record for the most goals scored in a single FA Cup season, with 19 goals for Preston North End in the 1887/1888 season. Tec McDougall holds the record for the most goals scored in a single game with nine goals in Bournemouth's 11-0 thrashing of Margate in 1971. Ashley Cole is the most successful player in the tournament, with seven FA Cup medals. Arsene Wenger also won the FA Cup a record seven times.

FA Cup 2022/23

The 2022/23 FA Cup is the 142nd edition of the competition. It started on the 5th of November 2022, with the final expected to be played at Wembley Stadium on June 3, 2023. Paul Mullin is the current top scorer with eight goals. He plays for the National League side, Wrexham.

The first round took place between the 4th to 7th of November 2022, where 32 clubs from the fourth qualifying rounds were joined by 48 clubs from league one and league two. Replays in case of a draw were played from the 14th to the 17th of November 2022. There was a significant upset in the round where level 7 side Alvechurch beat level 3 side Cheltenham Town at Cheltenham's home ground. Alvechurch won 1-2 with two strikes from Waldron.

The second round was held 26th and 27th of November, with replays on the 7th and 8th of December. There was no major upset in the round.

The third round took place between the 6th to 9th of January. Twenty teams from the previous round were joined by 54 teams from the Premier League and Championship. There were a few shocking wins, like the Tier 5 side, Wrexham, beating the Championship side, Coventry City, in a 4-3 thriller. Another interesting one was the Premier League side, Aston Villa, losing at home to the Tier 4 Stevenage.

The fourth round saw defending champions Liverpool get eliminated by fellow Premier League side Brighton. The most successful club in the competition also got eliminated to close table rivals, Manchester City.

The fifth round will occur on the 28th of February and the 1st of March, 2023. It involves 16 teams, the lowest being the Tier 4 side, Grimsby Town.

H3: FA Cup Semi-Final: What to Expect

The Semi Final of the FA Cup will be played at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 22nd of April 2023. The four teams that will be participating are yet to be decided as the fifth round, and quarter-finals have not yet been played.

Nine of the 16 teams participating in the fifth round are Premier League sides, the highest tier of English football. Still, only seven can make it to the next round because of the Fulham – Leeds and Manchester United – West-Ham match-up. The Semi-Final is expected to be largely filled with Premier League sides, but who knows, an upset is always possible. Like they say, "it's football, anything can happen".
