We've covered this recently, but Pitt forward/center Talib Zanna was having some kind of time in the Greentree Summer League. On Wednesday, Zanna finished off an outstanding group of games, winning MVP honors as well as the championship game.
Zanna and Pitt point guard James Robinson led PGT Trucking to a 108-101 win over The Lair in the final game. Zanna was his usual spectacular self, scoring 37 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
I'm on record for saying these games don't mean a ton. There's little defense and players are largely playing with a group of guys they won't be playing with during the regular season. I'll say this, though - Zanna's performances have been so dominant that it's hard not to take notice.
This isn't a guy who's averaged 15 and 10 a game - according to what I could gather from Scout's free articles, Zanna averaged 28 points and 15 rebounds. Those aren't big games, they're video game numbers. Zanna won't be that dominant in the regular season, but if he came anywhere close to those totals, it would be considered a huge year. I'm not putting a lot of stock into his big games, but it's fair to say that I'm excited to see what he can do this season.
One other note was that Josh Newkirk was named as the league's top freshman.
