SMU started their 2025 season with a 42-13 win over the Lions. The SMU defense forced three turnovers, including pick-sixes by Alex Kilgore and Ahmaad Moses. Quarterback Kevins Jennings was 22 for 30 passing the football for 260 yards and two touchdowns, plus he had another touchdown running the football. Romello Brinson might have emerged as the top wide receiver for SMU as he caught seven passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. Miami transfer running back Chris Johnson Jr. ran for 44 yards and a touchdown on six carries in his fdebut for the Mustangs.
