The former Pitt guard confirmed his transfer plans Monday night

Point guard Marcus Carr announced his intent to leave Pitt on April 20 after previously requesting his release from the program in March, and on Monday night, he revealed he will be transferring to Minnesota to continue his college career. Carr will sit out the 2018-19 season at Minnesota due to transfer rules but will then have three years of eligibility remaining.

“I’m committing to the University of Minnesota,” Carr told Evan Daniels of 247Sports. “I went out for a visit there this past weekend and really fell in love with the place. I got a chance to meet coach [Richard] Pitino and tour the school, and after leaving there and talking to my family, I just felt that was the place for me to be.”

Carr first joined the Panthers as a three-star recruit out of Montverde Academy in the 2017-18 season, and he was one of few members of the team to inspire optimism among the fanbase. Heading into the season, Jay Bilas of ESPN called him one of the 32 best freshmen in college basketball, and while that may have been an overstatement, he certainly showed promise.

During his freshman season, Carr led Pitt in assists, with four per game, and ranked third in scoring, with 10 points per game. With that said, he also led the team in turnovers and struggled against elite competition in the ACC, as he was held to five points or fewer seven times during Pitt's conference schedule. But even with the improvements he’ll require, Carr was further along in his development than most players brought in by former Pitt head coach Kevin Stallings.

While Carr was sorting out his transfer, first-year Pitt head coach Jeff Capel was busy bolstering Pitt’s backcourt with the additions of four-star guard Trey McGowens and three-star guards Xavier Johnson and Curtis Aiken Jr. He still has three scholarships at his disposal, although that total could increase if Kene Chukwuka and Malik Ellison decide to leave the program. They also requested their release in March but remain undecided on their next steps.
