Pitt loses out on Isaiah Whitehead to Seton Hall

Pitt's basketball program lost out on another highly-touted recruit for next season - this time it was five-star shooting guard Isaiah Whitehead spurning the Panthers. Whitehead chose Seton Hall over Pitt and others on Thursday.

The loss is just the latest one for head coach Jamie Dixon as he tries to land his first player for the 2014 class.

Whitehead was a bit of a long shot as I alluded to on Wednesday. His favorites seemed to be Seton Hall and St. John's, and one reason why he chose the Pirates was the opportunity to be 'the man':

Seton Hall pitched that Whitehead could be the face of the program going forward.

“It appealed to me greatly, that’s the reason I’m going there to tell you the truth.

It's not that a player can't become a star at Pitt and be a go to guy. DeJuan Blair did it along with Sam Young. Steven Adams could have done it had he stayed. Thing is, though, Dixon's teams are generally pretty well rounded and you've got to be a special special talent to be able to take over. That's not to say Whitehead couldn't do it, but it's a lot easier to do it at a less established program.

Thing is, too, that with an impressive incoming recruiting class, dominating the ball might not be all that easy, either.

Another thing to watch is how fellow 2014 shooting guard Khadeen Carrington feels about that. He was another Pitt target, but also chose Seton Hall. Carrington isn't the talent that Whitehead is but I'd be interested to see what he thinks hearing Whitehead talk about being the face of the program when he's a pretty respected recruit in his own right. And yeah, playing the same position makes it even more awkward.
