Panther of the Game: Tom Savage

There was no shortage of stars for Pitt's offense yesterday. We could have picked any number of players on the offensive side of the ball, but we can only take one. We could have given freshman phenom Tyler Boyd the hat trick to kick off the season as he was a beast again with six catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns. We could have went with his sidekick Devin Street (Yes, that's right...I'm calling Boyd Batman and Street Robin, and not the other way around. Do you have a problem with that? Tough. It's a fact right now.). Finally, it was very hard to not give the number one star to Boyd's true freshman classmate, James Conner. The rookie runner finished with 26 carries for 173 yards and a touchdown. Only one touchdown James?

Despite all of these big numbers, Panther fans had to love what they saw from the player of the game - quarterback Tom Savage. The redshirt senior gave Pitt fans something they haven't seen in a very long time and that is a QB with a very strong arm and someone that can throw a great deep ball. In case you haven't seen them, here are Savage's eye-popping numbers from yesterday: 23 of 33 for 424 yards with six touchdowns and 0 interceptions. That, my friends, is a great day.

Savage was good early and often and spread the ball around. He also sealed the game in an agonizing fourth quarter, with a nice 3rd down completion to Kevin Weatherspoon, who made an equally fantastic catch to ice the game. Pitt's offense looked good on Saturday, but much of that had to do with Savage's play.
