We've already spoken about the defensive line and secondary for the Florida State Seminoles, two areas that certainly will get most of the attention heading into the season. The defensive line will be fast and physical, as well as the secondary, who should be one of the best in the country.
But the linebacker group down in Tallahassee should be one to watch as well this coming season. Not only do they return talent and experience, as that unit returns intact.
Senior Matthew Thomas comes back as the senior leader and the top tackler from 2016. Along with Ro’Derrick Hoskins, Dontavious Jackson, and Adonis Thomas, the linebacker core will also have depth to go along with the experience.
When speaking with Kelvin Hunt from Chop Chat, he also believes that this could be a group to keep an eye on, especially with what they showed in the Orange Bowl last year. But there is also room for concern.
“The linebackers are a bit of a concern and they were lackluster for much of last year, but if they play like they did in the Orange bowl they'll be fine,” Hunt said. “Senior Matthew Thomas should lead the way with Ro'Derrick Hoskins, Dontavious Jackson, Emmett Rice and JUCO transfer Adonis Thomas available for depth. The 'Noles will have four-star Leonard Warner as a true freshman who'll look to contribute on special teams for the most part.”
When looking though at this defense, this could be the group that will be tested the most. The secondary will be locked in, as teams will have a tough time testing the deep ball against the talent the Seminoles have.
The physicality of the defensive line could create havoc in the run game and forcing the opponents quarterback to make quick decisions. With those two factors coming into play, these linebackers could be a focal point this season.
