NC State Football, This Is Not Our State

It’s not our triangle; it’s barely even our zip code.  For the first time in school history, NC State has lost to every major in-state rival in the same year, and hasn’t won a single conference game.  Road losses to Wake Forest (L 28-13) and Duke (L 38-20), and bad home losses to UNC (L 27-19) and ECU (L 42-28) have left NC State fans more than apathetic.  Watching Duke have an amazing season and UNC turn it around and get bowl eligible, hasn’t helped either.  With a tougher schedule next year, NC State fans have to wonder if we’ll be in the same boat again.

There are a few things to look forward to for NC State fans though.  For starters, Coach Doeren and his staff made a big splash by signing a lot of in-state talent, something that was a major complaint by fans under Tom O’Brien.  Known as the #Pack14 on twitter, this class of incoming Wolfpackers brings in a lot of promise with their excitement for the program and the opportunities in front of them, as well as what appears to be already a team atmosphere and brotherhood among them.

Secondly, there is the eligibility of Florida transfer QB Jacoby Brissett.  Brissett is a 6’4 231lb QB that is more the style QB that fits Doeren’s system and his idea for NC State’s offense should be.  At Florida in 2012, Jacoby started one game, going 23 of 35 passing for 249 yards and a touchdown.  He also came off the bench throwing for two touchdown passes and helped lead his team to victory over Louisiana.  In 2011, he was the first true freshman quarterback in school history to make a first career start at quarterback, going up against No. 1 LSU in Baton Rouge.  Jacoby will have two years of eligibility at NC State.

There’s also the plus that Doeren and his staff has learned a lot this year.  Doeren is still a young head coach; this being only his third year as a head coach and not having experienced struggles and adversity like he has this season.  One can only hope with having a year under his belt in this conference and a full off season in which to rework the chalkboard, that we’ll see some improvement on the field and question fewer coaching decisions.

So, yes, it’s just not our state this year.  Good thing for us there’s always next season.
