The NBA is more fickle than the Roman mob in the days of Julius Ceasar.  One moment you are the next star and in a whisper your NBA dreams vanish before your eyes.  James Michael McAdoo is all you need to look at when deciding whether or not to stay in college.  As a freshman McAdoo struggled early on adjusting to college basketball and life in the ACC yet because of injury his minutes increased in February and in March allowing the freshman to put on a show during the NCAA tournament.  Had McAdoo jumped to the NBA some team would have drafted him in the lottery based on a small snippet of games instead of two years later hoping to land on a team as a free agent undrafted rookie.

Is McAdoo a worse player now than he was in 2012? Dean Smith always said a player made the largest growth in college from their freshman to sophomore years and when you look at McAdoo that is absolutely the case.  During his freshman season McAdoo averaged six points per game while playing 15 minutes a night. As a sophomore playing out of position much of the season McAdoo average 14  ppg and doubled the number of minutes played each night.  He did struggle from the free throw line and increased his turnovers however he played the five position for North Carolina’s run to the sweet sixteen.  How often did you hear McAdoo complain or criticize his teammates during this year where it would be understandable to hear excuses.

McAdoo chose to return for his junior season believing that with PJ Hairston back with Marcus Paige the Tar Heels would be a favorite to win the national title.  This play to another turn and McAdoo again was a strong leader for a team that faced extreme adversity through the early part of the season.  Once again McAdoo averaged 14 ppg while playing 30 minutes every night.  His efficiency from the floor actual improved despite what many may think.   To average the same amount of points he actually took fewer shots each night and decreased his turnovers from 2.7 pg to 1.4.  Where McAdoo continued to struggle was from the foul line where went backwards to 53% made on the year. His sophomore year may have hidden his struggles from the foul line because he only attempted 4 each night compared to taking nearly this past season.

McAdoo endee his career at UNC connecting two free throw to tie the game with Iowa State.  Hopefully McAdoo’s connects with an team to fulfill his goal of playing in the NBA.
