Kevin Stallings acquires a quality assistant to fill his last coaching position.

Kevin Stallings has completed filling out the major components of his staff, and his latest hire is Georgetown's Kevin Sutton

There were rumors as early as yesterday morning that Sutton would be joining the staff, and may have possibly already been at a workout with the team. Sutton joined the Georgetown staff back in July of 2013 coming from George Washington. His bio from his own website offers some extensive experience:

Coach Sutton has 26 years of coaching experience.  During those years he has been a college assistant five years at James Madison University, Old Dominion University, George Washington University and Georgetown.  In addition, Sutton coached at five nationally ranked high school programs: Flint Hill Preparatory, Harked Preparatory, St. John’s Prospect Hall, Montrose Christian, and Montverde Academy.

Sutton has amassed an overall coaching record of 475-115.  He has won two National Championships: 1998 he was the Associate Head Coach on the USA Today Super 25 National Champion team and in 2007 he was the Head Coach of Montverde Academy Hoops.Com National Champion team.  He has also coach two different schools to second place national finishes: 1999 his Montrose Christian team finished 2nd in the nation among Christian school at the National Association of Christian Athletes and then in 2010 his Montverde Academy team was runner-up in the ESPN/Rise Magazine National High School Invitational.

Coach Sutton has built the reputation of being an outstanding teacher of the game of basketball.  He has help develop and place well over 130 student-athletes into college on scholarships at all levels.  Some of his notable players are: George Lynch (UNC),  Arron Bain (Villanova), Randolph Chilldress (Wake Forest), Cory Alexander (Virginia),  Exree Hipp (Maryland), Serge Zwikker (UNC), Chiech Dia (Georgetown), Cameron Dollar (UCLA), Jason Harris (Fordham), Nate James (Duke), Jason Capel (UNC), Jason Conley (Missouri), Marvin Lewis (Ga. Tech), Charles Cook (Mt. St. Mary’s), Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (UCLA), Vytataus Valulis (Citadel), LD Williams (Wake Forest), Solomon Alabi (Florida State), Joseph Katuka (George Washington University), James Wang (Williams), Dashan Harris (Texas A & M), Marcus Capers (Washington), Jamail Jones (Marquette), Rob Chubb (Auburn), Idong Ibok (Michigan State), Ugo Okam and Steve Missi (Harvard), James Bell (Villanova), Marcus Capers (Washington State), Haukur Palsson (Maryland), and many others.

His reputation as an outstanding teacher affords him the opportunity to work the following prestigious camps: Nike Hoops Jamboree, Nike All-American Camp, Michael Jordan Flight School, LeBron James Skills Academy, Steve Nash Skills Academy, Kobe Bryant Skills Academy, Amare Stoudemire Skills Academy, and Paul Pierce Skills Academy.

My initial impression is this is a very good hire. He obviously has a wealth of experience at different levels of basketball and at more than a few programs. I like that his territory seems to be strongly in the ACC areas which Pitt has lacked with its assistant coaches. He's very tied into some elite high schools, and has shown a knack for developing players. In my research, I didn't find many instances of teams he's associated with landing high caliber players attributable to him, but he seems to be very well respected in the coaching ranks. Here's an article from him in the Huffington Post on "Good Basketball Teams Do These 18 Things on Defense", and he's ranked as the #23 best X&O's assistant from this site.

I'm pretty intrigued by the staff Stallings has put together. He didn't just simply bring his entire staff from Vanderbilt, and went outside the box hiring a couple of guys that he doesn't really have a history of working with (from what I can find), and have worked in ACC territories Pitt has to hit hard if it wants to be successful in the ACC. This staff has a very east coast feel, and I think that's a positive. I'd like for Pitt to break into Ohio a bit as well, but I like the flavor overall of the staff, and I actually feel it's a better ACC staff overall than Dixon's three assistants were.
