Game Preview: Georgia vs Georgia Tech

For the 111th time, Georgia Tech and Georgia will meet each other on the field.

Georgia Tech is coming in hot with a better win-loss record this season being four games better than last season. They meet UGA this year with a 7-4 record while last year they came in 3-8.

That four-win increase is the second-biggest among all power 5 programs behind only No. 10 Colorado who has five.

Georgia holds a 65-40-5 advantage in the all-time series, including a 30-14-1 edge in games played in Athens. But, Georgia Tech has come out on top in two of its four trips to Sanford Stadium under head coach Paul Johnson, including a 30-24 overtime victory in its most recent visit to Athens in 2014.

Georgia’s best out-of-conference win was over North Carolina, which beat Tech by 28 points but on the flipside, Tech’s best out-of-conference win was a 31-point annihilation of Vanderbilt, which beat Georgia in Athens.

Crazy weird, right?

Georgia Tech is coming off two big wins in their division: an upset over then No. 14 Virginia Tech and Virginia. That momentum should carry itself into Athens on Saturday.

Quarterback Justin Thomas is still playing despite injury but had 122 yards and completed five of his 10 pass attempts in the win over Virginia. It’s great to see that he had a better season that last year and he really clicked with his offense. He, his receivers, running backs and offensive line are meshing and better understanding this offense. Georgia Tech has the better offense, hands down as they’ve been doing it under head coach Paul Johnson for nine years.

They’ll also have primary running back Dedrick Mills back in the mix as well, as he’s coming off another two-game suspension for violating team rules, again. With him and Marcus Marshall in the backfield with Thomas, they’re averaging 260.3 rushing yards per game this season, which leads the ACC and ranks ninth in the nation.

“It gives us some more depth,” coach Paul Johnson said Tuesday when asked about Mills’ return. “Most games we’ve played both those guys, and I’m sure that’s what will happen again. It’s good to have him back. I think he’s a good player.”

For the Bulldogs, working under a new coach, they’re still getting to know one another. On offense, the Bulldogs act differently every week, and sometimes they don’t act very well. There’s no way to pinpoint exactly what to expect defensively and offensively.

Freshman Jacob Eason is still learning the ropes as a starting quarterback and producing chemistry with his receivers. The Yellow Jackets defense can definitely take advantage of that. But Nick Chubb and Sony Michel are getting more touches and have been producing more yardage for the latter part of the season against decent defenses.

The Georgia defense has started to grasp the hang of Smart’s vision and played exceptionally well in the upset of No. 9 Auburn.

Final Thoughts

The Jackets have outscored their opponents by 33 points; the Bulldogs haven’t outscored their opponents at all.

That’s something to think about.
