Florida State looks to bounce back from Cards against USF

The stunning thrashing at the hands of a Lamar Jackson-led Louisville team was the talk of the college football world last weekend. 63-20 read the final scoreboard.

“It wasn’t about trying harder, it was about making sure they stayed in the game”- a calm and collected Jimbo Fisher said to the media after the game.

When down 48-10, in a raucous Louisville environment, Coach Fisher made every attempt at keeping player morale up as much as possible.

“This isn't about winning the game, it's about finding our identities as competitors and people. You understand what I'm saying? Competitors and people, who do you want to be? You have to have the guts to make it [happen]. Do you hear me?"

We learned a lot about Florida State and Louisville in this matchup. Lamar Jackson is the clear front-runner for the Heisman trophy at the moment, and the (somewhat) surprising leading candidate over the media-darling DeShaun Watson for ACC Player of the Year. The early-season hype for redshirt Freshman QB Deondre Francois needs to be toned down a bit, especially with true freshman QB, and fellow elite recruit Malik Henry expected back soon.

How will a young Florida State team rebound against a 3-0 South Florida team this weekend? You better believe that Jimbo Fisher and his assistant coaches are looking to light a fire under their players, especially playing against a very solid in-state school, and one that has won 10 of its last 12 games since starting out 1-3 last year.

Losing potential sophomore All-American Derwin James certainly stings, but with plenty of five-star talent to boot, including an expected healthy dosage of star tailback Dalvin Cook, FSU should respond in a ferocious manner.

Coach Fisher is anxious to see how his young team responds to what he calls a “very good” South Florida team

Last season, South Florida wound up with a respectable 8-5 record but won seven of their last nine games led by quarterback Quinton Flowers and running back Marlon Mack.

Flowers finished last year completing just over 59 percent of his passes for about 177 yards a game with 22 touchdown tosses against eight interceptions. He also rushed for 991 yards, which was second on the team to Mack, who rushed for 1,381.

"Outstanding team, undefeated, averaging 50 points a game, playing really good on defense," Fisher said. "Will be one heck of a challenge going down to their place.

"Be a very big test for us to see how we want to respond, how we want to react, who we're going to be, who are we, and what are we going to do."
