Five Things I like About the ACC Schedule 2.0

Well here we go again. The ACC released their modified scheduled today, and should there be a season what do we like about the schedule.

You know how this works, because after this I’ll tell you what I don’t like.

Notre Dame on the ACC Schedule

ACC fans can say how much they dislike Notre Dame, and I get it. The independent obsessed Irish never joining fully, their NBC contract, and they smugness of it all. The fact remains if Notre Dame joined the ACC in football, it would be a boost to the conference. While I’m still not a fan of Notre Dame getting to play for an ACC Title, they are a legit top 20 team. Clemson vs Notre Dame was already in the schedule, but Notre Dame at UNC has the potential to be a lot of fun.

Georgia Tech vs Florida State

The most natural ACC rivals that never get to play are playing this year. Several times in the late 90s early 2000s this was game of the year in the ACC. Then expansion killed the annual meeting. Let’s hope there is a way to have this game more often in the future.

The Tobacco Road Matchups

Wake Forest, North Carolina, NC State, and Duke playing a round robin set of games. With the proximity these schools are to each other, these games should create great regional interest. In a normal season, where sometimes these teams struggle with attendance this would fill seats.

The Double Byes for most teams

You can expect there will at least a few cancellations of games. The Double Byes give enough flexibility that some of these games maybe able to get rescheduled, plus the ACC Championship is scheduled for Dec 12 or December 19. I like not locking into a date on that. That also provides flexibility in scheduling.

Scheduling non-Power 5 OOC opponents

Louisville still hosting Western Kentucky, Virginia still hosting VMI, Florida State still hosting Samford, etc etc. These non-Power 5 teams will have enough troubling putting schedules together, and many of these ACC teams keeping them on the schedule helps the little guy. Take note SEC, Big 10, and Pac 12 who took their ball then ran and hid.
