Five ACC Teams Earn Bids to NCAA Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Five Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball teams picked up bids to the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, as Duke, Miami, NC State, Pitt and Virginia were selected to the 68-team event, which opens Tuesday with First Four games in Dayton, Ohio. The first round will be contested Thursday and Friday.


 
Winners of nine straight games, ACC champion Duke (26-8, 14-6 ACC) earned the No. 5 seed in the East Region and takes on No. 12 seed Oral Roberts on Thursday in Orlando, Florida. The Blue Devils are making their 45th NCAA appearance and their first under Jon Scheyer, who was a key figure on Duke’s 2010 national championship team. The Blue Devils are 118-39 all-time in NCAA Tournament action, with national championships in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010 and 2015.
 
The ACC regular-season co-champion, Miami (25-7, 15-5) claimed a No. 5 seed in the Midwest Region and will face No. 12 seed Drake on Friday in Albany, New York. The Hurricanes notched their 12th NCAA Tournament bid, including their second straight and sixth under head coach Jim Larrañaga. The Canes are 11-11 all-time in NCAA Tournament action, including an Elite Eight appearance last season.
 
After tying Miami for the ACC regular-season crown and reaching the championship game of the ACC Tournament, Virginia (25-7, 15-5) is seeded No. 4 in the South Region and plays No. 13 seed Furman on Thursday in Orlando, Florida. The Cavaliers will make their 25th NCAA appearance in program history and the ninth in the last 11 seasons under head coach Tony Bennett. Virginia captured its first national title in 2019, which also marks the ACC’s most recent national championship. UVa is 35-23 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.
 
NC State (23-10, 12-8) claimed its 26th NCAA Tournament berth, including its second under head coach Kevin Keatts and first since 2018. The Wolfpack nabbed a No. 11 seed in the South Region and will play No. 6 seed Creighton on Friday in Denver, Colorado. The Wolfpack is 37-24 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, with titles in 1974 and 1983.
 
Pitt (22-11, 14-6) picked up a No. 11 seed in the Midwest Region and will play Mississippi State on Tuesday in a First Four game in Dayton, Ohio. The winner advances to play No. 6 seed Iowa State on Friday in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Panthers earned the 27th NCAA bid in program history and the first under head coach Jeff Capel. It also marks the program’s first NCAA berth first since 2016. Pitt is 24-27 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
 
The ACC’s current 15 member schools have captured three of the last seven NCAA Championships (Duke 2015, North Carolina 2017 and Virginia 2019), with 92 NCAA Tournament wins in that seven-year span. Current ACC schools have won eight NCAA titles in the last 21 years and own 17 national championships overall. Current ACC member schools have combined for 66 Men’s Final Four appearances and a national-best 657 NCAA Tournament wins.
