Consistency is the Name of the Game for FSU Wide Receivers

Florida State has certainly had some impressive play makers at wide receiver, including Kelvin Benjamin and Travis Rudolph under head coach Jimbo Fisher.  But with the loss of three receivers from last season in Rudolph, Jesus Wilson, and Kermit Whitfield, there are a ton of chances for new names to make their case as the next great from FSU.

This year’s receivers for Florida State have yet to carve their name in the ACC but that doesn’t mean the talent isn’t there this year.

Kelvin Hunt from ChopChat spoke about it more with us at All Things ACC.

“It looks like leading receivers Nyqwan Murray, Auden Tate and Keith Gavin will be the primary receivers for Florida State this year. Murray and Tate are both juniors with Gavin being a sophomore. Gavin is the most talented of the group and played quite a bit as a true freshman last season. I expect him to be an impact player this year.

Tate and Gavin are huge receivers at 6'3" or more that should free up Murray in the slot, who when motivated is extremely difficult to cover. All three of these guys should be excellent in the red zone.

The coaches are looking for consistency, especially from Murray. A side note, these large physical receivers should aid in establishing the run game too.”

Murray and Tate both recorded 25 or more receptions and over 400 yards this past season, while also hauling in 11 touchdowns between the two.  Both have big play potential but in different ways, as they averaged just over 16 yards per catch in 2016.

Tate could be that next gifted, big receiver the Seminoles are looking for and could be in for a big 2017 season, as well as Murray being used in the slot position.  But as Hunt mentioned above, he may be the most talented of the group which could make this unknown group into a scary one in the ACC.  Gavin was a highly-touted prospect in high school at Wakulla, ranked as a four-star product and one of the top receivers in the country by 247Sports.

Right behind them sits George Campbell, who has battled tough times while at FSU but was ranked as a five-star receiver out of high school back in 2015.  If he can get back anywhere near where he was before, Campbell will also be in the mix this year.

Add Da’Vante Phillips, a junior, and freshman DJ Matthews, the Seminoles could have yet another offensive explosion through the air with quarterback Deondre Francois leading the attack.  But right now, this group of receivers is looking for consistency on the field but could certainly continue the success the Seminoles have had under Fisher.
