Boston College Men's Basketball is in the middle of the charts, does it have more chances this coming season?

With about ⅔ of the season in the books, it looks like another middling basketball season for Boston College. The Eagles sit at 10-12 overall and 4-7 in a relatively weak Atlantic Coast Conference. With ten games remaining, plus at least one in the ACC tournament, BC has an outside shot to finish with a winning record for the first time in five seasons. At the very least, they can show progress from last season’s 13-20 record.

The national rating systems do not think highly of this year’s Eagles. KenPom ranks them 183rd in the nation, ahead of only a handful of power conference teams. The NET ratings have BC at 194th. Further, they are 0-5 in Quad 1 games, defined as home vs a top 30 NET team, on a neutral site vs a top 50 NET team, or on the road vs a top 75 NET team. Quad 2 is home vs a  31-75 NET ranked team,  neutral vs a 51-100 NET ranked team, or on the road vs a 76-135 NET ranked team, and BC is just 1-4 in those games. Their only quality win thus far is a 70-65 overtime victory at home over Virginia Tech, the 54th team in NET.

Bay State residents can legally wager starting at 10 AM on January 31st in three locations; the MGM Springfield Casino, Encore Boston Harbor Casino, and Plainridge Park Casino. The windows will open up for online betting in early March, in time for conference tournaments and March Madness. Bay State residents can bet on BC tournament games, but not on regular season games as Massachusetts does not allow wagering on regular season games for in-state college teams.

New customers can start signing up now on the betting apps of Massachusetts and take advantage of welcome offers, including those at Caesars Sportsbook. Sign up, deposit funds, and place a bet. If it wins, collect the proceeds. If it loses, Caesars gives back the stake as a “bet credit”, up to a maximum of $1250.

Fans may not miss the inability to wager on BC unless they like playing Unders. The Eagles just do not have enough offense. They carry a 101 Adjusted Offensive Efficiency as per KenPom, that is adjusting for their competition they score 101 points per 100 possessions. That ranks only 253rd, and trails the 104.4 AdjOE of an average team. Their Effective Field Goal % is 47.6%, just 299th best. BC shoots among the fewest three pointers of any team in the country, which makes sense considering they only hit 29.6% of them, 339th out of 363 teams. They shoot the 12th most 2-pointers as a percentage of their overall non-turnover possessions, but they do not hit those with any efficiency either as their 49.0% mark ranks 236th. The only thing BC does above average on offense is they avoid turnovers relatively well.

On the plus side, leading scorer Quinten Post has only played in the last nine games and has sparked a modest uptick. He is averaging 16.2 PPG including 22 vs Louisville, 29 vs Notre Dame and 24 vs Virginia in his last 3 games. The 7-footer from the Netherlands with a bit of an outside game is definitely the most interesting player on the roster. He is a senior but does have another year of eligibility remaining.

BC’s Offensive Efficiency was 117.3 vs Louisville and 124.0 vs Notre Dame, the best two showings of the year, albeit against two of the weaker teams in the ACC. The next leading scorer, Makai Ashton-Langford, averages just 12.9 PPG on just 26.9% shooting from three, but he too has gotten hot lately with 21 and 20 in those two games.

BC has played a bit better on the defensive end, with a 102 Adjusted Defensive Efficiency on KenPom, good for 117th in the nation. They do relatively well-generating turnovers with a 19.7% rate, the 108th best, and also in keeping opponents off the free throw line with a 26.1% rate. Plus for anyone that buys into the theory that teams have limited control over the 3-point% they give up, BC has had bad luck. Opponents have hit a sky-high 37.8% of their shots from behind the arc. Of course, the corollary is that the real key is keeping the opposition from taking the trey in the first place, and BC ranks in the bottom third of the country there.

Looking ahead, BC can still improve on their 13-20 mark in 2021-22 with only a few more wins. Getting over .500 looks tough though. They only play two more games against teams ranked below 86th in KenPom. One is a road game at Florida State and the other is their home finale vs Georgia Tech. That game vs the Yellow Jackets is the only remaining one where KenPom favors BC. Of their other remaining games, the best shot for a win is on February 4th at home vs Syracuse. BC will get at least one game in the ACC tournament, almost certainly in the first round and against a relatively weak opponent on a neutral court.
