CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The second day of the 2026 ACC Football Kickoff shifted the spotlight to several of the conference's top contenders, with Clemson, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, and Boston College taking center stage.
While Day 1 focused on new quarterbacks and conference-wide changes, Thursday's discussions centered around championship expectations, experienced rosters, and which programs are best positioned to challenge for an ACC title this fall.
Clemson Ready to Return to the Top
No team commanded more attention on Thursday than Clemson.
Head coach Dabo Swinney made it clear that expectations inside the program haven't changed. After another successful season and a roster loaded with veteran talent, the Tigers believe they have everything necessary to compete not only for an ACC Championship but for a national championship as well.
Although Clemson's representatives at media day didn't include quarterback Cade Klubnik, Swinney praised the leadership throughout the roster and pointed to the team's experience on both sides of the football. Defensive stars Sammy Brown and Will Heldt, along with tight end Olsen Patt-Henry, represented the Tigers, highlighting a team that expects to be among the nation's elite once again.
For the rest of the conference, Clemson remains the measuring stick.
Louisville Believes It Has the Pieces
Few programs have generated as much quiet optimism entering 2026 as Louisville.
Head coach Jeff Brohm spoke confidently about a roster capable of competing with anyone in the ACC. Much of that optimism centers around transfer quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, who arrives after spending three seasons at Ohio State and is expected to lead one of the conference's more balanced offenses.
Louisville also returns one of the ACC's top defensive linemen in Clev Lubin, whose pass-rushing ability gives the Cardinals a proven difference-maker up front.
After consistently finishing near the top of the conference under Brohm, Louisville believes this year's team has enough depth to stay in the championship race deep into November.
Virginia Tech Focused on Taking the Next Step
Virginia Tech entered Charlotte carrying plenty of momentum after showing steady improvement over the past season.
Head coach Brent Pry emphasized building consistency and developing a tougher, more physical football team. While the Hokies continue integrating new talent, the expectation inside the program is clear: competing for an ACC Championship rather than simply reaching bowl eligibility.
Virginia Tech's confidence reflects a program that believes it has finally established the culture necessary to contend every season.
Georgia Tech Aims to Build on Recent Success
Georgia Tech continues to gain respect across the conference after several seasons of steady improvement.
Head coach Brent Key discussed maintaining the physical identity that has become the foundation of the Yellow Jackets' resurgence. Rather than viewing last season as a breakthrough, Key emphasized that Georgia Tech expects to remain a consistent factor in the ACC race.
With several experienced players returning, the Yellow Jackets believe they can challenge anyone on their schedule.
Boston College Seeking Another Step Forward
Under head coach Bill O'Brien, Boston College enters 2026 with increased stability throughout the program.
Quarterback Mason McKenzie represented the Eagles at ACC Kickoff and highlighted the confidence developing within the offense. Boston College hopes improved quarterback play and an experienced defense can help the Eagles climb the conference standings after showing flashes of progress a year ago.
Syracuse Looks to Stay Competitive
Syracuse rounded out Thursday's schedule as the Orange continue working toward becoming a consistent contender in the ACC.
The message from the program centered on player development, improving depth, and competing every week in one of college football's deepest conferences. While Syracuse enters the season without the preseason attention received by Clemson or Louisville, the Orange believe they have the talent to surprise opponents throughout the fall.
Day 2 Takeaways
Several themes emerged during Thursday's media sessions:
-
Clemson continues to embrace its role as one of the ACC's premier championship contenders.
-
Louisville believes its transfer additions, led by quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, can elevate the Cardinals into serious title contention.
-
Virginia Tech is focused on turning recent progress into sustained success.
-
Georgia Tech expects last season's improvement to be the beginning, not the peak.

With one final day remaining, ACC Football Kickoff turns its attention to another star-studded lineup featuring North Carolina, SMU, Pitt, Duke, California, and Wake Forest. Friday's schedule is expected to draw national attention as Bill Belichick makes his first ACC Football Kickoff appearance as North Carolina's head coach, while defending conference contender SMU will also take the podium ahead of what promises to be another highly competitive ACC season.
