5 Things I don't like about the 2022 ACC Football Schedule

The ACC recently released their 2022 ACC football schedule. Here we take a look at what we didn’t like about the 2022 ACC Football schedule. Tuesday we wrote about what we did like.

So here we go.

1) Miami’s first conference game is October 8

By the time Miami plays their first conference game on October 8, some ACC teams will have already played 3. Um… just how exactly does that make sense? Miami also uses their BYE week by then, so they have to end the season with 8 straight conference games. The ACC schedule did the Canes no favors.

2) Georgia Tech’s Opening 5 Games

The person that can’t like Georgia Tech’s schedule is Geoff Collins. Already with a seat on fire, Collins and Georgia Tech open the season with Clemson, Western Carolina, Ole Miss, at UCF, and at Pitt. The ACC schedule never gave Georgia Tech a chance to build momentum. It’s hard to see a scenario where Georgia Tech wins more than 2 games in their first 5 games. It will likely be just 1 win, and then it’s curtains for Geoff.

3) Why is Florida State playing two Friday games?

Friday night football has grown on me. That doesn’t mean anyone in the ACC should be playing more than 1 a season. Why is Florida State playing two Friday games? One of them is their rivalry game with Florida which seems odd as well. I guess that’s OK, but a with a Friday night against Louisville in September too, and that’s more than an ACC team should be playing.

4) Eight Straight weeks without a BYE

We’ve already talked about Miami finishing the season with 8 straight weeks of football without a BYE, but they aren’t the only ACC team that has to play eight straight weeks without a BYE. Duke and Clemson also play 2 months without a BYE week. Theirs is to open the season. Their BYE weeks don’t come until October 29. Ouch…

5) Conference games before SEC Rivalry Games

The SEC has mastered the art of scheduling soft before their rivalry game weekend. This year they didn’t do as bad as year’s past. For example, Kentucky and Georgia are playing each other before their rivalry games. Still, Miami and Clemson play before Clemson’s South Carolina game. Louisville faces NC State the week before Kentucky, and Georgia Tech is playing UNC before Georgia. These really should be lighter matchups prior the rivalry week in most years.
