Virginia Tech just hired Justin Fuente. He rebuilt Memphis football and won 19 games the last two years. He was one of the hottest names in college football, and Virginia Tech landed him. It was a really good hire for the Hokies it appears. Miami just landed Mark Richt. He only won 145 games in 15 years at Georgia.

Bronco-MendenhallUNC’s Larry Fedora, Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson, Duke’s David Cutcliffe have all won Coastal Division Titles and had 10+ win seasons within the last three years. Pat Narduzzi was universally hailed as good hire at Pitt, and he didn’t let anyone down. The Panthers are having their best season in several years, and nearly won the ACC Coastal.

The only ACC Coastal school that appeared to lack a commitment to football was Virginia. They kept Mike London too long, they over scheduled, and they just kept losing.

Well hats off to Virginia. They made an out of the blue hire that was rock solid. Former BYU coach Bronco Mendendall is the new head coach at Virginia.

Mendenhall has only won at least 8 games at BYU every year but one since 2005. Even as BYU went to a more independent national schedule starting in 2011, they still won 8-10 games a years.

What always impressed me about his BYU teams was how physical his teams were. They were tough teams capable of running it down your throats. Mendenhall isn’t from the East Coast and hasn’t coach in that part of the country. That is one drawback, but he can certainly coach. Hiring some assistants with knowledge of the Virginia area would certainly ease Mendenhall’s transition to the area.

The ACC Coastal now has 7 very good coaches, that have been successful and successful in the very recent past.

The ACC Atlantic has Jimbo Fisher, Dabo Swinney, and Bobby Petrino. Dave Doeren has given NC State fans hope, and Dave Clawson has improved Wake Forest. Steve Addiazo brought toughness to Boston College and 2 bowl seasons in 3 years. Syracuse didn’t waste time firing head Scott Shafer and is looking for a new coach.

It’s become very clear the ACC is as deep at head coach as I can ever remember, maybe ever. This is a conference that has improved as a football conference over the last 3 years, and steps continue to be made that the momentum won’t soon stop.
