Virginia Tech's Caleb Farley is an early warning for spring college football

When potential first round NFL pick Virginia Tech CB Caleb Farley opted out of the 2020 football season, it should have served as an early warning for spring college football.

From Caleb Farley…

“I am opting out due to uncertain health conditions and regulations and all the other opt-outs in football right now,”

Nobody can blame Farley for his decision especially in these uncertain times.

If the college football season is unable to proceed in the fall and is pushed to the spring then expect and huge influx of decisions like Farley’s.

The NFL draft isn’t getting moved. The time for players to recover from any injury and prepare for the NFL will be greatly reduced if there is a college football spring season.

My prediction is 40% – 50% of college football players with draftable grades will opt out.  That’s some 100 college football players with the majority from Power 5 schools opting out.

Is that even worth the effort to have a shadow of a college football season? I don’t think so.

College Athletics will have enough on their plate just to play college basketball and the other spring sports. In fact, I would already be focusing on how having a safe spring sports season is possible without the burden of bringing college football into the picture.

I will miss college football like everyone else, but I’m not interested to see a season with so many of the best college football players likely opting out.

I want to see the focus in the spring on college basketball, college baseball and the other spring sports. The athletes in those sports deserve 100% of their school’s and conference’s attention to make their environment as safe as possible.
