UNC Football: Tar Heels fifth in USA Today prediction

USA Today came out with their college football conference predictions and UNC comes in near the bottom.

A day that started off all about smiles (literally) with the annual picture day for the Tar Heels, received a different vibe from USA Today later in the day.

They released their annual conference predictions on Monday and North Carolina finished fifth in the Coastal Division with a 6-6 (3-5) record. The two teams they beat out: Duke and Virginia.

Not to anyone’s surprise, they picked Florida State as their conference champ, with an 11-1 (8-0) record. That lone loss can be assumed to be at the hands of Alabama.

For the Coastal Division, they had Miami beating out Virginia Tech by one game.

There is no question that the Tar Heels lost a lot from last year’s team, and still have more questions than answers when it comes to their depth chart.

They have yet to name a starting quarterback to replace the number two overall pick in Mitch Trubisky, but whoever it is has large shoes to fill.

Carolina is coming off of a season in which they regressed from the year prior. After an 11-3 record in 2015, they finished last year’s season with an 8-5 record, failing to win their bowl game for the third straight year.

The Tar Heels have only finished worse than third in the division once since Coach Larry Fedora took over in 2012, and that was in 2013. In that time, the Heels have won the division twice and finished runner up another time.

In a different feel going into this season than last, this time the Tar Heels are going in with little expectations from the media.

Carolina kicks off their season September 2nd at 12:20 pm at home against Cal.
