Head coach Larry Fedora spoke on UNC’s quarterback situation following a loss to Cal on Saturday.

Entering Saturday’s game against Cal, North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora decided not to go public with who would start at quarterback.

Instead, he hinted that the Tar Heels could use Brandon Harris, Chazz Surratt and Nathan Elliott in the game.

Well the Tar Heels used two of those quarterbacks with Harris starting the game and Surratt coming in on the third series.

Fedora spoke on his decision following Saturday’s loss, sticking to his word on what would happen.

“When we went into the game, we said ‘Okay, we’re going to start Brandon Harris and Chazz Surratt is going in on the third play of the game,” Fedora said. “Then we’re going to play it by ear from that point on.’ I anticipated both of them playing throughout the game.”

After Saturday’s game, it might be clear who the Tar Heels should start moving forward.

The LSU transfer Harris struggled in his Tar Heels debut finishing the game 7-of-16 for 60 yards, two interceptions and zero touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Surratt looked better as he moved the ball down the field giving UNC’s offense a spark when it needed one.

Surratt finished 18-of-28 for 161 yards, a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown.

“We just felt like [Surratt] was really poised throughout the game,” Fedora said. “He handled the situation very well. I never saw him panic. He took the ball where it was supposed to go according to what the coverage dictated. He didn’t make all great throws, but I thought he was doing a good job.”

When evaluating the overall quarterback play, Fedora was looking to see how both quarterbacks responded.

He talked about that following the game as well.

“From the sideline, I thought that the thing that I was looking for, was to see how poised they were throughout the game,” Fedora said.  “When a mistake was made, how did they recover from it, and I thought both kids played hard. I thought both kids did the things within the system. We had a couple throws that we’d like to have back. We’ll look at the film and see what he saw and go from there.”

As for what to expect for the upcoming week Fedora didn’t name who would start versus Louisville and likely won’t until later in the week.

Now we just have to sit back and wait, again.
