Game Recap

Recaps below...

Boston College lost to Northern Iowa 81-69 in the Paradise Jam (Box Score):

UNI got off to a strong start, building a 10-point lead in the first half before the Eagles (3-2) charged back behind their strong presence on the offensive glass. Boston College, which returns a veteran team that played in last year's NCAA Tournament, finished with 14 second-chance rebounds for the game.

"That's what they do, and they were able to do that for the last 15 minutes of the first half," said Jacobson. "Our offense, fortunately, continued to be good. We were able to score with them, but we had a hard time stopping them."

The Panthers tightened up their defense in the second half, battled harder on the backboards down the stretch and continued to make their offensive possessions count. UNI had just five turnovers in the game.

WRAL recaps UNC's 93-72 win over Gardner-Webb (Enhanced Box Score):

Roy Williams admits he's thrown a lot at his young North Carolina players to get them ready for the season. It sounds like he's about to demand a little more from them.

Deon Thompson matched his career high with 22 points to help the 11th-ranked Tar Heels beat Gardner-Webb 93-72 on Monday night, bouncing back from their first loss of the season with a relatively easy win against an overmatched nonconference opponent.

Tyler Zeller added 16 points off the bench for the Tar Heels (5-1), who led by double digits most of the way and had little trouble with the instate Big South Conference program. It was the 599th victory for Williams, now in his seventh year at his alma mater following 15 seasons in Kansas.

HokieSports.com recaps Virginia Tech's 71-60 win over Campbell (Enhanced Box Score):

Virginia Tech finished the game on a 21-11 run and held off an inspired Campbell team, 71-60, in men’s basketball action Monday night in Gore Arena. With the win, the Hokies improve to 3-0 on the season, while handing the Camels their first loss of the season following a 3-0 start.

The Hokies took a 33-31 lead into the intermission on a three-point field goal by junior JT Thompson at the buzzer. Tech opened the game on a 7-0 run before the Camels eventually took a 27-22 lead with 3:55 remaining in the first half on a three-pointer by Lorne Merthie.

IndependentMail.com recaps Clemson's 102-66 win over Winthrop (Enhanced Box Score):

Caught Clemson's No.19 men's hoops team for the first time live and in living color tonight, and wasn't disappointed by the 102-66 thrashing of Winthrop.

But after Monday night, it’s time for Clemson to enter a new, far more challenging phase – where the Tigers can find out a little more about themselves in more interesting fashion.

They’ve clearly proved all they can in a four-game stretch against overmatched foes.

The Tigers improved to 4-0, with three of those wins coming over Big South teams, and the other – an 89-67 rout at UNC-Greensboro – against a Southern Conference foe. Winthrop fell to 2-2. Clemson has now won its last 33 November games under Purnell.  Winthrop coach Randy Peele was not pleased, either.

"I asked (my team) after the game if they understand the team they are playing for," he said. "I don't come to Clemson to get beat by 36. It is a matter of understanding how good you have to be. You can't win if you give people second and third shots......This is just not acceptable."

Next up for Clemson: a trip to the challenging 76 Classic in Anaheim, Ca.., which features three teams in the top 16 of this week’s Associated Press poll – No.9 West Virginia, No.10 Butler and No.16 Minnesota – as well as Texas A&M and UCLA.
Clemson begins with Texas A&M at 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon; the winner will face either West Virginia or Long Beach State Friday.

The Washington Times recaps Maryland's win over Chaminade (Box Score):

Sean Mosley scored 19 points, Eric Hayes added 12 and Landon Milbourne had 10 to help the Terrapins defeat the Silverswords on Monday night in the first round of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.

The Terps (4-0) advanced to a semifinal meeting Tuesday with Cincinnati, which beat No. 24 Vanderbilt 67-58 in the first round.

Notes

  • Just as I think JT Thompson isn't the right guy to be the 3rd scorer for the Hokies, he steps up and has his best game of the season.  Thompson led the way offensively and defensively for the Hokies in a game that Campbell led for much of the way.
  • Clemson had 6 players in double-figures and 11 in the scoring column.  The
