Game Recap

The Pitt men’s basketball team suffered a disappointing one-point loss to Iowa earlier this week. But the Panthers rebounded for a big win over Duquesne in the annual City Game on Friday, 74-53.

It was a close game for the most part until Pitt pulled away late. The Panthers led by only six with about eight minutes left. But the Panthers went on a big run as Duquesne went scoreless for about seven minutes near the end of the game.

It’s another impressive milestone for the Panthers, who move to 7-1 on the season. Four Panthers were in double figures, led by freshman Trey McGowens, who had 14.

Ten of those points came at the free throw line and, after the charity stripe debacle at Iowa earlier in the week, Pitt’s fortunes were dramatically changed there tonight. Pitt got to the line 27 times compared to only 13 for Duquesne. The Panthers also dominated on the boards, winning that battle, 42-33, behind nine rebounds from Audiese Toney.

Duquesne falls to 4-2 on the year and, while not an incredibly tough opponent, it’s always great to save face in that game. More importantly, the win got the Panthers back on track after that loss to Iowa.

Next up, Pitt will face Niagara on Monday.
