CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 2026 ACC Football Kickoff officially opened Wednesday at the Hilton Charlotte Uptown, signaling that college football season is no longer on the horizon—it's almost here.

ACC Football Kickoff: Commissioner's ForumDay one featured representatives from Miami, Florida State, NC State, Stanford, and Virginia, along with ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, who addressed the media before the coaches and players took the podium. From conference policy changes to quarterback battles and championship aspirations, there was no shortage of headlines.

ACC Adjusts Championship Tiebreakers

The biggest conference-wide announcement came from Commissioner Jim Phillips, as the ACC unveiled a revamped tiebreaker process for determining participants in the ACC Championship Game.

The change follows widespread criticism surrounding last season's tiebreaking scenario and is designed to place greater emphasis on head-to-head results while creating a clearer path to selecting the conference's top two teams. The move was widely viewed as an effort to improve transparency and avoid another controversial finish.

Miami Embraces Championship Expectations

Miami entered Charlotte carrying some of the highest expectations in the conference after reaching the College Football Playoff last season.

Head coach Mario Cristobal repeatedly emphasized consistency, using the phrase "Get Better Daily" as the program's guiding message entering 2026. The Hurricanes are once again expected to feature one of the ACC's most explosive offenses.

Much of the attention centered on transfer quarterback Darian Mensah, who arrives with enormous expectations. Cristobal praised Mensah's leadership and maturity, expressing confidence that the Hurricanes have the pieces necessary to compete for another ACC title and a return to the CFP.

Florida State Believes the Foundation Is Finally in Place

Florida State enters 2026 looking to rebound after an inconsistent campaign, but head coach Mike Norvell made it clear he believes the Seminoles are positioned for a major step forward.

Norvell highlighted the value of returning experience, noting that many young players were forced into significant roles a season ago. He also pointed to defensive coordinator Tony White entering his second year and the addition of veteran coach Tom Herman as reasons for optimism.

Quarterback Ashton Daniels discussed his comfort within the program, while wide receiver Duce Robinson expressed confidence that Florida State has the talent to contend throughout the ACC race.

NC State Riding Momentum Behind CJ Bailey

NC State once again generated plenty of buzz, with sophomore quarterback CJ Bailey viewed by many as one of the conference's premier quarterbacks entering the season.

Head coach Dave Doeren appeared alongside Bailey, running back Duke Scott, and defensive end Isaiah Shirley. Bailey's development remains one of the biggest reasons analysts believe the Wolfpack could challenge for an ACC Championship.

Scott also received attention after earning the honor of wearing NC State's prestigious No. 1 jersey, a number reserved for players who exemplify leadership and commitment to the program.

Virginia Settles Its Quarterback Situation

Virginia head coach Tony Elliott removed one of the conference's biggest preseason questions by announcing that transfer quarterback Beau Pribula will be the Cavaliers' starter entering Week 0.

Pribula earned the job after a strong offseason and gives Virginia an experienced signal-caller as the Cavaliers look to build on last year's surprising ACC Championship Game appearance.

Elliott also shared encouraging news regarding standout linebacker Kam Robinson, whose recovery from a torn ACL has progressed well enough that he could be available for Virginia's season opener.

Stanford Begins a New Era

One of the more intriguing stories entering the season belongs to Stanford.

First-year head coach Tavita Pritchard officially begins his tenure after taking over the Cardinal program, and much of Wednesday's discussion centered around establishing a new culture.

Stanford also appears to have found its starting quarterback in Michigan transfer Davis Warren, whose leadership has quickly earned the respect of teammates. The Cardinal hope the combination of a new coaching staff and experienced quarterback can help reverse several years of struggles.

Looking Ahead

Day one established several early themes for the 2026 ACC season:

  • Miami is embracing championship expectations rather than avoiding them.

  • Florida State believes its young core is finally ready to deliver.

  • NC State's hopes rest heavily on the continued rise of CJ Bailey.

  • Virginia enters the season with clarity at quarterback.

  • Stanford begins an important rebuilding process under new leadership.

  • The ACC itself enters the season with a revised championship selection process intended to eliminate future controversy.

With two more days of ACC Football Kickoff remaining, perennial contenders including Clemson, North Carolina, Louisville, Virginia Tech, SMU, Pitt, and others will soon take center stage as the conference continues its countdown to the 2026 college football season.
