The ACC Tourney Kicks Off on Thursday

Duke and Carolina played on Saturday night, then we moved our clocks forward on the overnight, and ESPN is covering games being played by teams we never heard of.   Yup, that’s got to mean that Conference Tournament Week is upon is.

2013 ACCFor ACC fans, a ticket to the Greensboro Coliseum (where the ACC needs to stay permanently) will provide even the most enthusiastic college basketball fan with an overdose of the game we love.

Thursday’s line-up will feature encounters amongst the eight lowest seeded teams, whose winners will then meet the top four programmes on Friday.    Here are some thoughts on those games:

GAME 1 at Noon:

Boston College at 7-11 in-conference & 15-16 overall

Georgia Tech at 6-12 in-conference & 16-14 overall

Both teams have met only once this season, but the game will be fresh in their memory as they played that game this past Saturday afternoon.  B/C prevailed on a 12-0 run to finish the game that left Tech fans scratching their heads after a huge win against Miami just four days earlier.

I think the game is a toss-up, but with B/C’s Olivier Hanlan being named ACC Rookie of the Year, he could be the difference.  The winner draws Miami on Friday.

GAME 2 at 2PM:

NC State at 11-7 in-conference & 22-9 overall

Virginia Tech at 4-14 in-conference & 13-18 overall

Both teams met just once a month ago in an overtime game that saw the ACC POY, Erick Green, score 29 points in a losing effort.

State has had trouble living up to expectations all season long.  They have splits with Duke and Carolina in an otherwise lackluster season.

They should be able to dispatch Tech with focus on the game at hand, which will garner them a match on Friday against Virginia.

GAME 3 at 7PM:

Maryland at 8-10 in-conference & 20-11 overall

Wake Forest at 6-12 in-conference & 13-17 overall

Many college basketball aficionados in the media expected plenty of good things from the Terps, who started their conference season 13-1, but alas their lack of experience caught up with them.

Wake’s highlight win was against Miami, but lost to Maryland twice by large amounts.  I expect the Terps to prevail against the Demon Decons to draw a “rubber game” against Duke on Friday night.

GAME AT 9PM:

Florida State at 9-9 in-conference & 17-14 overall

Clemson at 5-13 in-conference & 13-17 overall

Clemson has suffered thru a forgettable year and meet the Seminoles in the late game on Thursday night.  Barring making the mistake of looking too far forward to North Carolina on Friday night to try and avenge both of their losses to the Tar Heels, I doubt that they will need to call on Michael Snaer’s last minute rescue.

Please don’t forget to check back for my report on the results of these games, and prognostications for the Friday night rounds.
