The former Pitt center will head to the West Coast in search of a larger role

Former Pitt center Terrell Brown is heading out west to play for San Diego of the WCC as a graduate transfer. The move will make him the second ex-Pitt frontcourt player to join a WCC team in the last year, as fellow 2017 Pitt recruit Kene Chukwuka left the program last May to head to Malibu and join Pepperdine.

The move paid off for Chukwuka to some extent, as he played a more prominent role with the Waves than he did with the Panthers and posted career-high averages of 6.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game en route to a CBI tournament title. Brown will be looking to fill a larger role as well, as he saw his minutes cut in favor of Abdoul Karim Coulibaly at Pitt this season and served as a bench player.

As a result of the reduced role, which saw Brown start just one game out of 21, the 6’10”, 235-pound center averaged just 2.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 11.0 minutes per game this season. Those figures were down from last season, when he averaged 4.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 18.0 minutes per game, making 12 starts in 33 games. And his Pitt career peaked in his sophomore season, when he posted 5.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 19.0 minutes per game, all of which were career-high figures.

In California, Brown will join an ailing Toreros team that went 3-11 overall this season and 2-7 in WCC play, earning a ninth-place finish in a 10-team league. With that said, San Diego is also just two years removed from the best two-season stretch in its history, as it posted back-to-back 20-win seasons between 2017 and 2019. That marked the only time in the program’s history that the Toreros were able to rack up 20 wins in consecutive seasons.

Exactly what kind of role Brown will play remains to be seen, as San Diego currently has 6’11”, 230-pound center Vladimir Pinchuk and 6’10”, 245-pound power forward Yauhen Massalski on its roster. Both bigs played more than 20 minutes per game and were among the Toreros’ top four scorers this season. So Brown could face some stiff competition for minutes. But given what he accomplished when given significant court time at Pitt, Brown could easily secure a starting role in San Diego.
